University fauna

An article in Dinamalar today (Madurai edition) features a "மரநாய்".

Point of Interest:

The fauna count in MCC has been on a steady incline. 'Most Mighty' seniors tell us that deer population was not there during their stay in Campus.

In my reckoning, Peacocks, resident Monkeys, Pigs (that deserve to be called "wild pigs") and Hedgehogs were absent during the sixties. Fruit Bats and the Chameleon too are perhaps recent additions.

I know we have the Pangolin, the Monitor Lizard and the Mongoose in abundance. Canine population has increased - understand these dogs group themselves and hunt down the weak among the deer population in the night. The increase in the number of peacocks sees a decrease in sighting of snakes (snakelings make tidy snacks for the peafowls).

As a frequent visitor to St Thomas's, I hear that "மரநாய்கள்" do live in the space between the top of the ceiling and the roof in D Block.

I want:

1) The present residents to confirm this...

2) And please let me know the common English name and the zoological names for "மரநாய்".

இயற்கையோடு இசைந்து வாழும் நம் கிறித்தவ கல்லூரி வாழ்வில் மரநாய்களுக்கும் மரியாதைக்குரிய ஒரு இடம் உண்டுதானே!
