University principal

My position as the PM at Thomas's in 70-71 required me to go over to the Principal's (Dr Devaneson) house to represent some student issue.

He answered my knock on the door with a "Come Right In!". So I went right in - to find that Dr D was in the dining room with plenty of European guests around. . .

With the smattering command over the language I had, I proffered an apology for 'barging in'.

Dr D threw a disarming smile and assured me that no one barges in into his house. I was introduced to the guests as an important student leader, and after I partook of the high tea, was asked what brought me there.

Dr D listened to me and then demonstrated one of his best CBMs (Confidence Building Measures) - he put his arm over my shoulder, looked into my eyes and said "Prabhakar, this is nothing you and I can not together solve", and also offered an easy solution for the matter I had gone to him for. . .

These words - "This is nothing you and I can not together solve" remain as best the management mantra I have been exposed to in my entire career as business man, factory owner, sales director etc.

I salute Dr D for the high STYLE AND SUBSTANCE he showed in all aspects of College/Student administration. . .
